Removing a wasp nest yourself — is it possible?

By Wespenprofis.ch · Reviewed by:Fachbewilligung Schädlingsbekämpfung VFB-S · Updated: 3 July 2026

At a glance

Doing it yourself is risky, particularly with queenless colonies, if you have an allergy, or with nests high up. Home remedies such as pouring water over the nest or smoking it out usually just trigger an attack instead of removing the nest. Licensed professionals work with cold treatment, mechanical removal, relocation or, as a last resort, biocides.

Why this is tricky

Whether a wasp nest can safely be removed by yourself is almost impossible to judge from the outside. If a colony loses its queen it becomes queenless — the workers then react extremely irritably and attack far more quickly, without any of this being visible from the outside. For people with an allergy, a single sting can already become life-threatening, and nests high up, for example in the roof or on the façade, also carry a risk of falling. Tackling a nest yourself is therefore particularly dangerous in exactly these situations.

What you should do straight away

  1. Check whether an insect venom allergy is present — if so, never take action yourself.
  2. Do not pour water over the nest — this only provokes an attack.
  3. Do not smoke the nest out — the smoke usually fails to destroy the nest, but it irritates the colony immediately.
  4. Do not climb a ladder on your own to reach a nest that is high up.
  5. Contact a professional (/wespennest-entfernen) who can properly assess the risk and the method.

Good to know

Depending on the situation, professionals use different methods: cold treatment freezes the nest instantly, mechanical removal is suitable for smaller, easily accessible nests, relocation is an option for beneficial or protected species such as the European hornet, and biocides remain the last resort in cases of acute danger or inaccessible cavities. Frequently asked questions

Why is a queenless colony particularly dangerous?

If a colony loses its queen, the workers become extremely irritable and dangerous. A queenless colony cannot be identified from the outside, which makes tackling it yourself impossible to assess.

Why does smoking out or pouring water over a nest not work?

Home remedies like these usually fail to destroy the nest completely, but they immediately provoke a mass attack by the colony.

What does a professional do differently from a home remedy?

Depending on the situation, the options are cold treatment, mechanical removal, relocation in the case of beneficial species or, as a last resort, a targeted biocide application — matched to the species, location and size of the nest.
