Hornet nest removal or relocation

Hornets are bigger and louder than wasps — but rarely aggressive. We establish which species you are dealing with over the phone and choose the gentlest solution.

Two species, two approaches

Switzerland is home to two hornet species in practice — and professionally they call for very different treatment. We establish which one you have over the phone, based on your description.

Not protected, but beneficial

European hornet (Vespa crabro)

The European hornet is not protected by law in Switzerland, but it is remarkably useful: over the course of a summer a single colony takes large numbers of other insects. It is also far shyer than its reputation suggests. That is why we check on every job whether a relocation is possible instead of destroying the colony — particularly when the nest is not hanging right next to your living space.

Must be reported

Asian hornet (Vespa velutina)

The introduced Asian hornet is noticeably darker, with yellow leg tips, and counts as an invasive species. In Switzerland any sighting must be reported — you will find the official reporting point at www.asiatischehornisse.ch . We will help you identify the species and handle the next steps properly.

The situations we hear about most on the phone

These are the locations and starting points that come up most often:

Nest in the loft

The most common location by far: hornets prefer dark, sheltered cavities under the roof. Usually it is the conspicuous flight path at the gable end that gives them away first.

Nest in a roller shutter box or garden shed

Unused outbuildings make for quiet nesting spots. As long as there is no direct contact, relocation is particularly often an option here.

Nest in a tree or hedge

Free-hanging nests in trees are typical of the European hornet. Depending on the height and the distance to your seating area, we assess the gentlest solution on site.

Nest near living space or an allergy in the household

If the nest hangs directly above the entrance, or someone in the house has a known insect venom allergy, we recommend prompt professional removal rather than relocation.

Common questions & concerns

What customers ask us most often about hornet nests.

Is a hornet more dangerous than a wasp?

No — quite the opposite. The European hornet is far shyer and much less likely to sting than the common or German wasp. It has no interest in your cake or sweet drinks and will realistically only sting if its nest is directly threatened. Its reputation is a good deal worse than its actual behaviour.

Does the hornet nest have to be destroyed?

Not necessarily. With the European hornet we check on every job whether the nest can be relocated first — particularly if it is not hanging right next to your living space. Only where relocation cannot be justified professionally, for instance where there is an acute risk to someone with an allergy, do we remove the nest for good.

I think I have seen an Asian hornet — what should I do?

Do not intervene yourself. Report the sighting via www.asiatischehornisse.ch, the official reporting point in Switzerland. Give us a call as well: we will help you identify the species and coordinate the correct next steps.

How do I tell which hornet species I am looking at?

The European hornet is reddish-brown with a yellow abdomen; the Asian hornet is almost entirely dark with strikingly yellow leg tips. The easiest route is a short description or a photo while we are on the phone — we can usually identify the species quickly.

What does removing or relocating a hornet nest cost?

After a brief assessment over the phone you receive a fixed price based on the location, the height and the size of the nest. A relocation follows exactly the same transparent fixed-price principle as a removal — with no hidden surcharges.

How quickly do I need to act about a hornet nest?

As long as the nest is not hanging right by your seating area or front door, there is usually no great urgency. Even so, an early assessment is worthwhile — not least so that we can identify the species and, in the case of the Asian hornet, get the report submitted in good time.
