The European paper wasp (Polistes dominula) is one of the most peaceable native social wasp species and is often mistaken for the common wasp, even though it is far more harmless.
Identifying features
- Body shape: very slender wasp waist
- Antennae: almost entirely orange-yellow
- In flight: the long yellow hind legs dangle clearly and visibly downwards
- Nest: very small and without an outer envelope — the combs lie openly visible, usually in warm, sunny spots such as under roof tiles or on metal railings
Risk
None: the European paper wasp is exceptionally peaceable, never comes to food or drinks and will practically only sting if you reach directly into the nest.
Protection status in Switzerland
Not listed in Annex 3 of the NHV (the ordinance under the Swiss Nature and Cultural Heritage Act), but it counts as a useful and harmless insect and should be spared. Red List status “least concern” (LC).
What to do if you find a nest?
Since the European paper wasp poses no danger, its nest should be left alone wherever possible. If you are unsure about the identification, we are happy to advise you.
