Wasp Nest in Winter — Does It Have to Go?

By Wespenprofis.ch · Reviewed by:Fachbewilligung Schädlingsbekämpfung VFB-S · Updated: 3 July 2026

At a glance

A wasp nest that you discover in winter is guaranteed to be empty and abandoned — the colony died in autumn and the nest will never be occupied again. Removal is therefore not urgent, but it can make sense for reasons of hygiene or building fabric.

Why the nest is empty in winter

A wasp colony lives for a single season only. With the first cold autumn nights the social structure collapses, and the old queen and all the workers die. Anyone who finds a nest in the attic, roller shutter box or garden shed in winter can be certain: it is empty, no matter how large and active it still looked in late summer. Even a very large hornet nest with many tiers is guaranteed to be uninhabited in winter. The guide When do wasps die in autumn explains in detail why this is the case.

Does the nest still need to go?

There is no urgent need to act in winter, as an empty nest poses no risk of stings. Even so, there are good reasons for removal: an old nest can hold moisture and damage the building fabric, leave residues behind, or leave an entry hole exposed that attracts other animals such as mice or birds. In such cases removal in winter is actually particularly straightforward and stress-free, because no animals are present any more and no protective measures are needed.

Will a new colony move back in?

No — and this is one of the most important rules of wasp biology: an abandoned nest is never occupied again. Every overwintering young queen founds a completely new primary nest in spring, usually in a different spot, even if the old location still appears suitable. The guide Do wasps return to their old nest goes into more depth on why wasps consistently avoid their former nest.

Practical approach

Check whether the nest is accessible and sitting somewhere unproblematic — if so, it can be left in peace until spring or removed whenever convenient. If it sits in a hard-to-reach or structurally sensitive spot such as the attic, professional removal via /wespennest-entfernen is advisable, rather than climbing a ladder yourself or pushing into tight cavities. The guide Wasp season in Switzerland sets out the full annual cycle of nest building and nest decline, including the question of how long a colony actually exists.

Frequently asked questions

Are there still wasps living in the nest in winter?

No. The old queen and all the workers died back in autumn. Only the new young queens overwinter, but not in the old nest — they do so in sheltered spots on their own.

Do I have to have the empty nest removed in winter?

Not necessarily. Since it will not be re-occupied, removal is not an emergency measure. It mainly makes sense if the nest draws in moisture or leaves an opening exposed.

Will a new colony move into the same nest next year?

No. Every young queen founds her own new primary nest in spring at a different location — the old nest stays abandoned for good.
