How Far Do Wasps Fly From the Nest?

At a glance
When foraging, wasps travel several hundred metres from the nest, sometimes more than a kilometre. They navigate by prominent landmarks and scent trails, which is how they reliably find their way back. The risk of being stung depends far less on the distance to the nest than on how close you are to the nest itself or to a food source.
A wide foraging range
Wasps are remarkably mobile when searching for food. On their foraging flights, workers regularly cover several hundred metres, and in good weather with a plentiful food supply sometimes more than a kilometre. This means that wasps appearing on your terrace or at the picnic table have by no means necessarily come from a nest in the immediate vicinity. A colony some distance away may forage regularly in a particular garden, as long as attractive sources of sugar or protein are available there.
How wasps find their way back
To find their way back to the nest reliably despite such distances, wasps navigate by prominent landscape features such as trees, building edges or paths, as well as by the scent marks they leave themselves. This ability allows a colony to search a large area around the nest systematically for food without losing its bearings. For the observer, it means that the mere presence of individual wasps says very little about the exact location of a nest.
Why distance does not mean safety
For the actual risk of being stung, the distance to the nest matters less than is often assumed: what counts above all is how close you come to the nest entrance itself or to an active food source. Wasps encountered far from the nest generally behave calmly as long as they are not disturbed. In late summer in particular, when colonies reach their peak strength, the number of wasps flying around within a radius of several hundred metres increases noticeably — more on this in our guide on wasps being especially aggressive in August and in the article on what attracts wasps. Frequently asked questions
Do wasps always return to the same nest?
Yes. Workers navigate by landmarks and scents and reliably find their way back to their own nest, even after long foraging flights.
Why are wasps a nuisance even far from their own nest?
Because they cover considerable distances in search of sugar or protein. A nest therefore does not have to be in the immediate vicinity for wasps to turn up in a particular spot.
Do wasps fly fast?
Wasps reach considerable speeds in flight, which allows them to reach even distant food sources within a few minutes.
