Will the fire brigade come out for a wasp nest?

By Wespenprofis.ch · Reviewed by:Fachbewilligung Schädlingsbekämpfung VFB-S · Updated: 3 July 2026

At a glance

In most cantons the fire brigade only turns out in cases of acute danger, for example when people are under immediate threat or when no licensed company is available in time. Ordinary wasp nests are usually a matter for a pest control company, often outside office hours as well — otherwise a fire brigade callout can become chargeable.

“Can I simply call the fire brigade if there is a wasp nest on my house?” This assumption is a persistent one, but it rarely matches reality. Responsibility is regulated differently depending on the canton and municipality — here are the key principles to help you get your bearings.

When the fire brigade really is responsible

Fire brigades are primarily responsible for averting danger where people are acutely threatened — for example when a nest has been unexpectedly broken open and people are in immediate danger, or when no licensed professionals can be reached outside business hours. For a “normal” wasp nest on the roof or in the garden, however, the fire brigade is not responsible in most cantons.

Why it is often chargeable

If the fire brigade turns out when there is no actual emergency, many municipalities charge for the callout. The precise rules differ from municipality to municipality and are usually set out in the local fire brigade regulations. If in doubt, a quick call to the municipality or the local fire brigade beforehand is worthwhile.

The better option in most cases

For the vast majority of wasp nests, a specialist company is the right place to turn — available more quickly, properly equipped and usually without the hurdles of a fire brigade callout. Many companies, ourselves included, offer appointments at short notice, see /wespennest-entfernen.

Genuine emergencies

Where there is immediate danger to life, such as an allergic reaction after a sting, every minute counts: in this case call the ambulance emergency number 144, not the fire brigade. For nest removal alone, without acute danger to people, the professional route via a pest control company is almost always the right one. Frequently asked questions

Does the fire brigade turn out for every wasp nest?

No, as a rule only where there is acute danger to people, such as a nest directly beside the front door with an immediate risk of stings. Normal cases are usually handled by a licensed company.

Does a fire brigade callout for a wasp nest cost anything?

Often yes, provided there is no emergency — many municipalities charge for such callouts. The details are set out in the relevant municipal regulations, so it is worth asking your local fire brigade or municipality.

What should I do instead in an urgent case?

Contact a specialist company directly — many offer appointments at short notice. Only in cases of immediate danger to life, such as an emergency involving an allergy, should you call 144 or 118.
